Pop Makeovers

25 Mar

I don’t listen to a ton of pop music, and sometimes when I step into a club where the DJs play “top 40,” I feel like an alien. Fortunately, when pop DOES find its way in my radar, it’s been chopped, screwed, refixed, remixed, and reborn. The most recent pop makeovers come to us by The Hood Internet, whose mashup of Hercules and Love Affair with Nicki Minaj redeemed the princess of rap, and DJ Van Scott (1/2 of Drlkt Freddie) who sent me a remix of Ke$ha’s “Sleazy” that gives the song (and the artist) a whole new face.

The two songs are polar opposites, actually, with Scott’s “Sleazy” remix serving as a full-on party track, and the Minaj/H&LA mashup better for a mellow setting. Needless to say, they’re both great. Give them a listen and enjoy:

Retail DJ July Podcast

31 Jul

Woohoo! On the last day of July, I finally put out the July podcast. As I explain in the introduction of the podcast, putting together this set was super difficult, mainly because a lot of the electronic music blogs have been putting up total crap. I mean that in the nicest way. It’s not so much that the individual tracks themselves are bad, it’s just that they all sound the same. I have noticed that the mixes I’ve come across as of late, while some suffer from the same problem, are fairly good because they include several other genres and mix up the sound. I think that’s really the key to good music – not being so stagnant and understanding that it’s in the mixing, the hybridity, that real music is born.

For this podcast, I really integrated a lot of the songs I have been getting ready to before I go out that amp me up and make me feel in a dance-y mood before I leave my apartment. I mixed in some music I’ve been introduced to by way of other mixes (such as the FCL tracks, which I first heard via mixes from La Fleur and Mowgli), some 80s music I heard and got all nostalgic about while watching Nip/Tuck, and some other items that are just generally personal favorites. The new tracks, such as Ali Love’s “Smoke and Mirrors” and Brodinski + Radioclit with “Plz Let Mi Fuk Ya (a weird, but fun track) are good stand-alones and were chosen because they have a unique sound that targets common bits of one’s musical palette without boring the person to tears.

While it was a trying task this time around, the podcast is solid, and I hope you all can enjoy the music as much as I do! (By the way, apologies for my voice – I’m a little sick!)

This Is the Remix

28 Jul

Kanye West's Hair

Kanye West’s song “Power” has definitely made its rounds on the radio, the mainstream media, and of course the blogs, but considering I am not a big fan of playing things out, I always look for remixes. Luckily, this one found me.

This rework comes to us by way of Van Scott (whom you can see DJ live next Wednesday, August 4th at the Retail DJ “Get Dressed for This” Showcase!) of Drlkt Freddie and DJs Are Not Rockstars fame. I’ll admit that I had trouble staying still at my desk when I pressed play . . .

Funk on a Friday . . . *Lay Me Back*

2 Apr

Remember Drlkt Freddie, the DJ wonderboys I interviewed recently who gave us a fun photoshoot and an amazing mix? Well one half of DF has put out his newest track, a collaboration with Streetlab called “Lay Me Back.” In our interview, Van described “Lay Me Back” as:

. . . based in rap/hip hop and it’s about the music hitting you and laying you back, the bassline knocking you out. It’s a song I really like.

The full release will be out on 4/20, but in the meantime, dance a little dance to this one!
