Now Playing: Music for Your NYE

31 Dec

I’m not a big fan of New Year’s Eve, but as a big music lover, I can’t help but contribute to the night’s festivities with a gift from me to you. For those of you who are staying home instead of joining the throngs of revelers out in the streets, or throwing smaller parties instead of going to blowout bashes, here are two mixes that may set the mood for you and your guests. One is a bit more on the house-y side, while the other is more of a booty dancing delight. Enjoy (click to play):

Kim Ann Foxman – Creature (+ Live Set from Sao Paulo!)

4 Nov

Kim Ann Foxman (photo credit: deepbeep

I just got home from seeing Leo Justi, EZRAKH, Krunk Pony, and Cool Hand Luke DJ at Zamaan Bar in Brooklyn thinking that my night could not get any better (seriously, they tore it up), when I saw this on Facebook (via Alexander Technique):

so . . .

a) I love most videos in b&w

b) I love any showcasing of vogue and derivative forms of dance

and c) beyond being really interesting visually, this track is hot. I can already imagine Azari & III making a sick remix of it (if you’re reading this, remix noooow).

But being totally serious, Kim Ann Foxman has been DJing for some time (and is really good live, I should add) but may be most well-known from her work with Hercules and Love Affair (you can catch her here playing the glasses in the video, though she technically did some vocal work on the track as well (along with track lead Nomi Ruiz, who went on to form Jessica 6)).

For Kim Ann Foxman’s DJing, check out this set she did in 2009 at Vegas Club in Sao Paulo for the Ludo party:

Retail DJ Septober Podcast, Part 2: The Mellow

1 Nov

In the first Septober Podcast: The Model, I encouraged you to “werk it” with the catwalk-worthy tracks I included as your diva/o soundtrack. But for this podcast, part two of the Septober series, I wanted to provide you with some music that while still active, was a bit more mellow in tone. The vibe is funky, soulful, and a whole lot of fun. As I mentioned in the post for part 1 of this podcast, the set includes some of my favorite tracks (among hundreds I went through during the months of September and October), including a track produced by Retail DJ featured artist EZRAKH. The vibe of this podcast is positive and at times even a little romantic (though not cheesy in the slightest). I hope you enjoy!

EZRAKH – “77 Theme”

24 Sep

EZRAKH sent me this video at the crack of dawn when we were talking shop. It’s of a completely original track he produced called “77 Theme.” It’s a bit like what would happen if the music of Tacteel, Thomas Bangalter, Roska, and Moodymann had a baby and left it on the doorstep of a talented producer and DJ from Rahway, New Jersey. Fortunately, their offspring would be in good hands considered it would be well cared for by a young man whose creative genius is endless. Check it out:

Special Event: Warehouse Saturday at House of Yes

6 Aug

EZRAKH sent me this info on a party he was spinning at House of Yes on Saturday, then it blew up. Every five seconds, a new DJ/special guest was added until the lineup looked like something even more fierce than it already was. On top of EZRAKH playing (and for those of you who have heard his mixes or saw him live at the Retail DJ “Get Dressed for This” Showcase on Wednesday, you know this is a very very good thing), DJ Reck, K-Swift, and DJ Sega are DJing. In other words, everyone’s going to be walking a little funny Sunday morning. . . that is, if their feet still work at all after all that dancing.

IT’S ONLY $7. You’d be crazy to pass this up. Oh, and did I mention the party got a shoutout in the Village Voice?!?! Yeah. Peep that.
