I Love Mondays: Hangover Remedy

31 Oct

Ah, the Monday after Halloween. Though I myself did not go crazy this weekend (just a few mellow parties here and there), I am sure some of you are going to be feeling the burn this Monday, and I mean burn by way of all the acid reflex post-candy overdosing fun, upset stomach from all the alcohol, and a headache or two. Yes, all that sugar plus alcohol means nothin’ but hangover, so I am sure you all will need a whole lot of coffee at the start of this week, and not just because you’ll be exhausted. That said, I don’t want to frighten you all back into the work-week with something that would compel sensory overload. This Monday, you’re going to have to ease back into the groove, and what better way to do that than with a funky mix by Vancouver-based DJ Neoteric?

For some reason, Canada seems to be producing some of the best DJs in the game. Maybe it’s the water? Socialized healthcare? Who knows. Whatever it is, it works, and I hope they keep on putting out more where these came from. Neoteric’s been around for some while, producing and mixing his way around the blog and club scene, and frequently introducing his listeners to some of the most fun and interesting tracks/sets I’ve ever heard. His sound is diverse, yet consistent in that you have no doubt before pressing play that it’s gong to be good.

This mix he did for Los Angeles’ world-famous dance party The Do Over is no different. It’s a rich set filled with a little bit of house (Detroit and Chicago had their hands deep in this one), some 90s hip hop, and a lot of funk. Check it out, and by that, I mean play AND download. You will be very sad if you don’t.

Get Dressed to This: Enter the Ninja

16 Sep

I believe the Jacques Renault and Marcos Cabral, the two masterminds behind Runaway, are men after my heart. With their newest work for the White Light Mix Series (headed up by DJ Neoteric and Matty C, both marvelous DJs in their own right), Runaway has taken the time to sneak softly and quietly into our souls with a carefully crafted combination of house and nuevo disco. The first track on the mix (which happens to not have a tracklist in order to, in their words, hold true to the old mix-tape style that required your listening to an entire set and not jumping around from track to track) is one that, without fail, makes me cry every time I hear it. The rest is truly a journey for the ears, fitting perfectly into the White Light Mix Series mission of providing listeners with music for “night driving introspection and taking the time to listen from start to finish.”

It’s a mission I appreciate, especially considering we are given so much music to hear, but not to which we are directed to truly listen and reflect on. The mission here at Retail DJ of course is different, but it nevertheless pushes an active engagement with music, requesting that the listeners (and the DJs who create the mixes) connect their visual and their aural, what they see as they pick out their clothes for a night out or a day at work with what they hear. It’s all about finding motivation in music, and fortunately, Runaway’s newest mix works for just that.

For the outfit this time around, I’ve chosen something that is dark, much like the mix, but that has a liquid-like flow from top to bottom. Channeling the concept of the ninja, dark and silent, yet on a mission, I’ve put together an outfit that will cause others to do a double take, even if they don’t hear you approaching in the distance. So take this time, press play, and Get Dressed to This . . .

Get Dressed to This: Jump Around

6 May

Jumpsuits often get a bad wrap. Despite coming in so many different varieties, making them perfect for almost any and every body type, especially if accessorized properly, people tend to dog on them. The main reason for this might be because people are wearing jumpsuits cut for body types different from their own. Jumpsuits are perfect for the spring and summer, especially for dancing, and if the jumpsuit has a print, it can speak for itself, sans a lot of accessories. Here’s and old mix from DJ Neoteric and a fun outfit, both of which will give you something to jump around about!

Mix on Tap: Sweet Jesus

25 Mar

DJ Neoteric

DJ Neoteric is one of my favorite DJs. The Canadian wonder has been quite busy as of late, dropping mixes for his innovative White Light Mix series (which we have featured several times here on Retail DJ), touring around the world, and of course, supplying us all with amazing dance-ready sets that will compel even the soberest of wallflowers to shake a tail feather.

In honor of Neoteric’s continued creative success, I give you a special Mix on Tap, featuring his newest edition for the Crookers Mix series (yes, the Italian fidget house duo that can’t be stopped!) and a drink that I feel best characterizes this mix:  Sweet Jesus!

Disco Nuevo

12 Jan

In case you haven’t heard, there has been a resurgence of two types of music as of late in the electronica/club scene, and no, i am not talking about dubstep. Both house and disco have risen from the speaker death they experienced when trance, techno, electro, and UK garage/grime/dubstep/niche took over. There have been several incarnations of house in recent years, including “fidget house,” which Crookers and Congorock made famous, in addition to the equally party-friendly tech-house, made popular by folks like Jesse Rose and Riva Starr. Yet another sound that pre-dates the electronica scene is disco, and it’s been given an entirely new face for the contemporary clubgoer/music listener.

What I like to call “Disco Nuevo” has been floating around the music scene in creamy mixes from the likes of several Canadian DJs including Matty C and DJ Neoteric, and Belgium’s Aeroplane, all of whom have taken the 70’s favorite genre and turned into something more fitting for the present. While some of the old disco elements are still there,  like the heavy bass, tinges of gospel, and sassy vocals, the general sound is smoother, more finessed and has light infusions of house and soft rock that provide music that’s good for lounging or dancing, if one sees fit.

Bearing in mind that it’s only Tuesday, I felt like these mixes would be more appropriate for easing you into the week, without overwhelming the senses. These mixes are from the White Light Mix Series, which is a compilation of disco nuevo mixes by a set of talented DJs you may already  know and love. Hopefully you all will appreciate these as much as I do. I have chosen some of the standouts of the bunch, but they are all honestly worth a listen, and a dance or two.
