Get Ready With Haruka Salt 999 – The Mix

19 May

It’s odd that we feature pop music and hip hop, at least in explicit, raw, un-remixed forms, here on Retail DJ. Yet when we do, we do it for very good reason. This time around, we were given a more than legitimate reason to post a lil pop thanks to this week’s featured artist Haruka Salt 999. Staying true to our commitment to provide the best music for dancing, getting ready, and general revelry at home or on the street, this mix provides the framework for all the above.

In keeping with her mission to provide a mixtape-like feel to all of her live and recorded sets,
Haruka takes us through a trip of hip hop, breaks, dance rock, funk carioca, and electronic dance music without a blink. When I got the mix in my soundcloud inbox, it’s initial title was “Get It Poppin.” I immediately knew I was in for a treat – one that I now share with you all without the slightest hesitation. This versatile mix is perfect for any mood, so I encourage you to play, download, and share it stat! Don’t waste any time. Come with us to Get Ready With Haruka Salt 999!

Retail DJ May Tracklist: Lost

29 May

Lost, the infamously puzzling, cryptic, and overly dramatic television (that I admit to have loved) is over. What I will do in the meantime to seek complete, televised fulfillment, I am not sure, but I know that music always makes everything better. That’s why this tracklist, Retail DJ’s 5th, has all to do with Lost.

See the tracklist below and follow along! Also, just as an FYI, if you download all of these, set the crossfader on your iTunes to 7 to 8 seconds, and play them in order, it all flows pretty well. As per usual, click to play, click the small arrow to download. Enjoy!

N.A.S.A. DJs Tonight!

7 May

When I first received the invite via GBH for the N.A.S.A. + Dave 1 of Chromeo show, I ignored it, thinking, “Hey, I have heard a ton of Chromeo, and have no idea who N.A.S.A. is. PLUS I am exhausted. I may not go.” But then I took a little MySpace music break and discovered that I had indeed heard of N.A.S.A. by way of some incredible mixes I had heard back in the day. It turns out that they supplied music to a ton of my favorite mixes and had somehow snuck beyond my radar (due to my not having read the tracklists a while back). BAD RETAIL DJ, I know!

So despite my not having given them props earlier, here’s a little shoutout to the boys at N.A.S.A., and I am not talking about the space scientists. This US/Brazil DJ duo has remixed a ton of songs and collaborated with artists like Kanye West, Lykke Li, Mr. Oizo, MIA, Santogold, and Spankrock. AKA, they can hold their own.

Check out more of N.A.S.A.’s work on their MySpace page (you are sure to recognize a few of the tracks) and see them live tonight for $1 at Webster Hall. P.S. Here is some of their stuff:

Great track “Whachadoin'” that somehow manages to mashup sounds from rock, funk carioca (“baile funk”), and breakbeat. . .

and the Mr. Oizo remix of their track “Strange Enough” (ft. WuTang Clan)

I <3 Mondays: Discotheque dans le Metro

28 Feb

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I am a die-hard fan of the White Light Mix Series. They are some of the best mixes on the web, for sure, if you consider music choice, consistency, and the overall ability to both relax and motivate AT THE SAME TIME. I didn’t know it was possible, but it is, thanks to these amazing musical gems. These mixes are great for a cure of The Mondays because they allow you to be productive while having a little aural fun. For this week’s I ❤ Mondays post, check out the newest White Light Mix by DJ Eleven. With its opening of Simian Mobile Disco’s and Beth Ditto’s pairing to an awesome remix of  “Love Can’t Turn Around,” this mix is sure to make your Monday a little . . . brighter.

I particularly liked DJ Eleven’s note on the mix:

“When Matty C first told me about the White Light series, he kept coming back to a description of listening to music while driving at night. Since most of us in New York City don’t drive, traveling music has to be approached differently. So I set out to make a mix from records I never get a chance to play out that would provide the perfect soundtrack to the walking, turnstile hopping, dude-selling-his-beat-tape-out-front-of-Fat Beats-avoiding, taxi-hailing, dollar-van-riding, slice-grabbing, coffee-on-the-run-drinking, and then walking a little more that is getting around the Rotten Apple.”

As a New Yorker who is always on the go with little time to just sit and think EXCEPT when I am in transit (how ironic), I found that DJ Eleven’s note was really fitting. This mix also happens to include a ton of songs and artists we have featured regularly on this site. Holler! 🙂

Friday Fashion Fail: Stirrups and a Smalltown’s Best

8 Jan

For today’s Friday Fashion Fail, I am going to have to agree with LottieP over at Fragments, stirrup pants are indeed a “charmless garment.” It’s a fashion no-no from the 80s and early 90s that sprang up yet again in 2009, much to my horror. I hated them as a child, and hate them even more as an adult, on whom they do not belong. They look like some sort of accident, as in horseriding gear meets man. As Biggie would say, it’s “dead wrong.”

Fortunately, they seem to have lost their baggie quality and, with the help of modern lycra weaving techniques and good old spandex reliability, the stirrup part of the stirrup pant is more of an added extra, not really a total leg-shape and body form destroyer. Though, seeing them like this makes me wonder where is the functionality in that little loop after all?

The good news is that not all of 2009 is lost in this resurgence of a fashion uh oh. There’s always music to save the day. So if you’re a fan of stirrups or not, check out the Smalltown DJ’s Best of 09 mix. You will be dancing in the aisles and singing along hard enough to frighten some of the American Apparel salespeople.
