Cajmere: Funky Fresh for 5 Mix

20 Feb

Curtis Jones aka Cajmere aka Green Velvet

What better a way to celebrate Presidents’ Day than by honoring one of the forefathers of house? Cajmere, the Chicago-based genius we also know and love as Green Velvet, has put out a new mix tape for 5 Magazine, a publication with the valiant purpose of championing one of the city’s contributions to the United States and the world. His new mix, the 4th volume in a series called “Funky Fresh for 5” covers typical sounds of the Cajmere/Green Velvet repertoire, ranging from gospel-house to outer space loops. He even delves into the progressive house realm towards the middle of the mix. This upbeat set is sure to keep you moving your feet on this beautiful day.

Be sure to stream/download this mix. If you’re hungry for more, check out Cajmere live in the mix for 5 Magazine on Wednesdays from 1-4 EST/12-3 CST here.

P.S. My first introduction to Cajmere (I didn’t realize Green Velvet and Cajmere were the same guy at the time) came via this scene in Party Girl, one of my favorite movies to date):

Gratuitous Dance Mix – Claude Von Stroke

16 Feb

Claude Von Stroke

Sometimes I like to post a mix just because. There is no specific subject matter or motivation behind it beyond that I feel like it. I came across this gem by Claude Von Stroke via facebook and spent my Saturday and Sunday cleaning the house to it (though doing little cleaning because I was dancing so much).

This mix, which he did for Mix Mag, is frenetic and jumpy, but has its deeper, almost house-y, moments as well. My advice: listen to the mix in full, then make your judgment. As with most Claude von Stroke pieces, you have to ease into it, but you won’t be disappointed. It will grow on you fast. Enjoy:

Retail DJ Septober Podcast, Part 2: The Mellow

1 Nov

In the first Septober Podcast: The Model, I encouraged you to “werk it” with the catwalk-worthy tracks I included as your diva/o soundtrack. But for this podcast, part two of the Septober series, I wanted to provide you with some music that while still active, was a bit more mellow in tone. The vibe is funky, soulful, and a whole lot of fun. As I mentioned in the post for part 1 of this podcast, the set includes some of my favorite tracks (among hundreds I went through during the months of September and October), including a track produced by Retail DJ featured artist EZRAKH. The vibe of this podcast is positive and at times even a little romantic (though not cheesy in the slightest). I hope you enjoy!

Come into My House

9 Jan

I feature a variety of music on this site, though you may have noticed by now that the bulk of it is electronica. Why? Because it’s made for dancing, for activity, for catalyzing the tiniest  hint of sluggishness into a hyperactive frenzy. Think about it: we often spend our weekdays stuck on repeat, our daily record scratching our lives into a bored oblivion. But music is there to get us back on track, to propel us into some other mental space that we never thought about reaching as we spent time at our desk, hours waiting in line, still moments as the light at the end of that long, dark, rat-infested tunnel shines onto the concave tiled walls in anticipation of our respective commutes home. You see, it’s music that interrupts all that and keeps repetition from killing us when it so desperately wants to.

When I came home this morning, a time when I typically would fall onto the bed, exhausted, only to wake up with eyeliner and lipstick smeared across the pillowcase the next day, I came across a mix I had seen floating around on the blogs for a bit, had downloaded, but to which I had yet to listen. It had gotten lost in the shuffle, literally, as I sometimes add new tracks so quickly that I don’t have time to listen to them before I have already added hundreds more to my list. Then I ended up moving onto yet another to which I had also given a nod, but nary a listen. Let’s just say that my Saturday began more like a Sunday in a Southern church than an early morning/late night spent practically comatose in bed. With music as my aide, I decided to head for the kitchen instead of the bedroom.

As I waited for the water to boil inside the kettle, which I needed to fill the French press and thus satiate my need for hazelnut-infused caffeine, the music that came on was enough to make me reflect, to dance, to cry, all in a short time. Despite the freezing cold that beckoned from the frosted windows, my soul was warmed. I had let House into my heart, and now I want to make mi casa yours. Enjoy:

Retail DJ January Tracklist

2 Jan

Well, it’s finally 2010. I’ve heard that even numbered years are the lucky ones, so I am keeping my fingers crossed. 2009 was…interesting. I got back from Brazil and started life in NYC all over again – new job, new place, new outlook on life. Here, at the beginning of a new year, I’m facing various other turning points, and hopefully optimism and a lot of hard work will continue to pay off. I haven’t made any official resolutions, as I often make goals for myself throughout the year, but I think I may do a “Dreams” poster, which is something I learned about from some of my Brazilian students. Instead of necessarily creating a long laundry list of personal aspirations/goals, many people cut out pictures that encompass the things – be they material or otherwise – they want to receive, earn, achieve, etc.

Considering that doing this very thing kept my spirits up as I searched for a job in the recession wrecked USA, I have complete faith in its power, if anything, to inspire and motivate the person who created the poster. For me, creating this site was also one of my dreams, and something I started working on when I was away. I hope to do the best I can to continue growing from here and making the site more and more awesome each day.

One huge aspect of this site is clearly music, and the focus on music as a soundtrack for our lives. It helps us as we grocery shop, cook, do laundry, work, and get ready to start and end our days. For me and many people I know, music is also a big part of setting our moods and behavior. If I listen to amazing music as I get ready for work or for going out, it makes everything better. I hope that those of you who read this site can gain something from it as well.

I wanted to open the new year with what will become a monthly feature for this site, a tracklist (you can download!) that will (hopefully) eventually became a full set/mix. If you have any questions about the mix, please feel free to leave a comment or email me. ALSO, spread the word about Retail DJ! Tell all your friends, link it on your blog or facebook, etc. I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks, and enjoy the music!
