Get Dressed to This: In the Trenches

31 Jul

Hello, boys and girls. This is the 4th installment of “Get Dressed to This” leading up to the Retail DJ Get Dressed for This” Showcase at B.East! August 4th is SO close, but never fret; I still have 4 more special edition posts coming up for you before the event!

For tonight’s Get Dressed to This, I’ve decided to put you readers in the trenches, literally! I found this beautiful dress at AllSaints Spitalfields that is a modern, sartorial remix if you will on the trench coat. According to their site, the Amka Trench Dress is ” has an extreme funnel neck and is inspired by traditional trench coats with heavy topstitching and lapels details at neck.” Though it’s no longer available on the site in black (which is the dress color I am featuring tonight), you can find it in dark brown, if the design suits your fancy. I love this dress because its silhouette is slightly vintage and almost military-style, but the asymetry and draping, despite its sturdy fabric, make it all the more modern. Depending of the accessories, you can look like a spy, femme fatale, or wartime reporter–either way, you can’t lose.

Speaking of modern, for tonight’s mix, I’ve got a set created for Slutty Fringe (great blog, check it out) by Lostbahnhof that does quite the modern musical tailoring of house, breakbeat, and new wave style tracks that cannot be missed. The mix takes a few minutes to warm up, but once it does, its deep trip into jacked grooves will make you march to the beat of a different drum (machine).

So anyway, have a good time tonight, but before you do, Get Dressed to This:

Retail DJ July Podcast

31 Jul

Woohoo! On the last day of July, I finally put out the July podcast. As I explain in the introduction of the podcast, putting together this set was super difficult, mainly because a lot of the electronic music blogs have been putting up total crap. I mean that in the nicest way. It’s not so much that the individual tracks themselves are bad, it’s just that they all sound the same. I have noticed that the mixes I’ve come across as of late, while some suffer from the same problem, are fairly good because they include several other genres and mix up the sound. I think that’s really the key to good music – not being so stagnant and understanding that it’s in the mixing, the hybridity, that real music is born.

For this podcast, I really integrated a lot of the songs I have been getting ready to before I go out that amp me up and make me feel in a dance-y mood before I leave my apartment. I mixed in some music I’ve been introduced to by way of other mixes (such as the FCL tracks, which I first heard via mixes from La Fleur and Mowgli), some 80s music I heard and got all nostalgic about while watching Nip/Tuck, and some other items that are just generally personal favorites. The new tracks, such as Ali Love’s “Smoke and Mirrors” and Brodinski + Radioclit with “Plz Let Mi Fuk Ya (a weird, but fun track) are good stand-alones and were chosen because they have a unique sound that targets common bits of one’s musical palette without boring the person to tears.

While it was a trying task this time around, the podcast is solid, and I hope you all can enjoy the music as much as I do! (By the way, apologies for my voice – I’m a little sick!)

Get Dressed to This: Doing Our Homework

30 Jul

In this third installment of “Get Dressed to This” leading up to the Retail DJ “Get Dressed for This” Showcase, I thought I’d put together an outfit based on school-girl cool. When I say “school girl,” I am not talking about “School Girl” TM that’s taken fine Catholic school uniforms and turned them into pornographic fantasy costumes. Instead, I am talking about that lounge-y, relaxed yet refined look I recall from my years in college.

Where I went to school, people did not show up to class in sweats or pajamas. They came to class well-dressed, usually on their way to/from work, an internship or even last night’s party, knowing that every moment spent getting from their dorm or apartment to class meant a possible opportunity for, well, anything. The moral of the story is that going to college in NYC means that looking good most of the time is one of the course pre-requisites. Fortunately, most of us did it in a way that didn’t break the bank or our backs. We pulled off style without trying too hard. We were surrounded by fashion and style in a way that seemed natural to our surroundings, so we just absorbed.

Speaking of absorption, remember the days when you thought that all the things you needed to study for exam could somehow be sucked up by your brain like a sponge in one night? Remember (or presently participate in doing) homework? Even if you’re no longer in school, clearly it’s a memory that some of you’d rather forget. But I’m here to remind you that doing your homework isn’t all that bad, especially if by that word I am referring to the Amsterdam-based house DJ duo Homework, whose music you have surely heard (if you’ve been listening to mixes here or in the club), but might not know by name. Well do your homework, kids, and Get Dressed to This:

Get Dressed to This: My Humps

29 Jul

Fergie Ferg? Nah . . .

This is day two in the countdown until the Retail DJ “Get Dressed for This” Showcase and I came prepared and bearing gifts: my humps.

In this case, when I say “my humps,” I am not talking about that Black Eyed Peas song with Fergie at the helm, I am talking about a twisted, structured take on the tulip dress by AllSaints Spitalfields and a fabulous  mix by Camel that incorporates tech house and classic house with such smooth grace that it gave me chills on a hot and humid day.

Though this dress and its structure is quite rigid and dark (the dress is stiff and corsetted at the waist and more pronounced areas), the cut is still sexy without losing its charm. It can be dressed down with more brightly colored jewelry or made more intense with darker metals and accessories. Considering that this set of Get Dressed to This posts are about easing you all into fall, I figured I’d make a compromise with a light yet intense approach 🙂

I hope you enjoy this mix and outfit as much as I had picking them!

Get Dressed to This: Gothic Goodness

28 Jul

As promised, I am adding a Get Dressed to This post each night leading up to the Retail DJ Get Dressed for This Showcase on August 4th!

This first installment involves a mix that comes to us c/o the Round Table Knights. Their live set at the Sonar Festival in Barcelona packs in a ton of soulful house grooves and techno that will make you feel sexy as you get ready to go out and remind you that even after a long day’s work, your energy level is all in your head (as this mix will surely elevate it.

There is no tracklist, but trust me on this one, if you like good music, you’ll like this set.

In addition to the killer music, I’ve put together a chic yet playful outfit with the central piece from AllSaints Spitalfields. It’s perfect for any parties that lead into the fall, combining the fun of summer plaid with the subtle hues of autumn. Though layered and form-fitting, the item is made of light-weight wool and is smooth on the body, allowing the skin to breathe as one moves.

Enjoy, and see you August 4th!
